“Message coming in commander big surprise. The alliance needs you again shepard. This is admiral admiral hackett with alliance command. We ve got a mission for you an alliance officer.
Major kyle to set up a small compound in hawking at a cluster. He s attracted a number of followers mostly biotics. He s become a tallis spoken critic of the alliance and we believe he s mentally unstable this could be trouble shepard. I ll look into it three days ago.
We sent two alliance representatives to meet with him at his compound. They ve disappeared. We believe kyle and his followers killed. Them that compound is a cult shepard.
They call him father. Kyle now. He set himself up as some kind of religious leader. You said his followers were biotics yes major kyle never showed any biotic tendencies himself.
Though i think he s just latched on to a group he identifies with many bionics feel marginalized or ostracized by society. Kyle probably sees them as victims who need his protection and they see him as someone who will fight for them. Unfortunately. He s convinced them that the alliance is somehow responsible for all their problems.
We can t let him go on like this what were those alliance representatives going to talk to major kyle about they wanted to bring him back to an alliance facility for treatment. Major kyle served us faithfully for many years. We weren t going to abandon him given his state of mind. However he probably saw them as a threat.
We re almost certain he had his followers killed him what else can you tell me about major kyle. He used to be a mama soldier. But something happened to him at orphan too many elias soldiers died under his command couldn t cope with the guilt. His psych evaluations showed he couldn t handle the stress of command anymore.
It was given a normal discharge in early retirement. We d hope you would get better in time. But we underestimated how far gone..
He was now it looks like it s too late. I might be able to end this without violence you serve with him he might listen to you. But he s already killed two alliance representatives. I trust you to use your judgment pack.
It out this is a private sanctuary. Outsiders are not welcome here. I need to talk to the man in charge. It s important father kyle wants nothing more to do with the alliance.
I want this to end peacefully. If he doesn t see me people could get hurt. We won t let you take father kyle away. He protects us.
We need him the alliance wants someone to pay for those murders. Let me speak to major kyle. And maybe i can find some way to help you all get out of this alive. Wait father.
Kyle will speak with you head to the building. At the far end of the compound. Everyone looks at us like we re freaks just because we have my odds the alliance wants to wipe us out. I am major kyle.
I know why you ve come we have no quarrel with you why can t you just leave us alone. What happened to those other alliance officers. The ones who came before me they wanted to take me away from here they wanted me to abandon this place turn my back on my family. They spoke blasphemy.
I did what i could to make their end quick and painless. I had no other choice. It was necessary to protect my children only i can keep them safe the alliance sent me to bring you in major can t you see this has gotten out of hand. Don t you understand you re endangering your followers.
I respect that you have come under a banner of peace. But i cannot do as you ask if you take away their father my children will be helpless. You ordered your followers to kill those alliance investigators you must face the consequences of your actions..
Do you really want your children to suffer for your sins to know this this was my fault my children are innocent pure. Please. I never meant for this to happen. I i m sorry you re doing the right thing.
Major your children will be better off for it come on wait if my children see you taking me away. They won t understand they will attack. And you will be forced to kill them all you have shown me the error of my ways commander. Now you must give me time to explain it to them.
It is the only way they will understand please give me one hour after that i will meet the alliance authorities at the gates of my compound and surrender without violence. I give you my word. I m going to trust you if you betray that trust you and all your children will suffer. I will not betray you commander thank you for this joker can have the fifth fleet pick major kyle up.
Let us hope you know you re doing message coming in patch. It through admiral hackett here commander your helmsman just forwarded to report on major kyle. We sent in a team as you instructed kyle s followers have disbanded and the major surrendered to us without incident. We ll make sure he gets the help he needs to be honest shepard.
I thought this thing was gonna end in a bloodbath. I don t know how you did it. But you saved a lot of lives congratulations. ery much influenced by what happened in the last argument of kings that kind of thing.
And it s just really cool to put all these ties together and particularly in some other characters like the reappearance of call shivers and how you know how much it has a helmet. What sort of relationship. He s had with the this is where the world were the story as the books have gone on and it s just a human. Both shivers hasn t got the main focus in this story.
And you still really understand him and really feel hit him and get why he s doing what he s doing in the small bits that you see him doing. But you also get some new characters that are on the sideline and get their own perspectives like like corporal tunney. Who s a very hilarious character. I thought and who s part of the battle overall might not seem to be the most exciting bit added.
Such a depth of realism to it and and great humor as well i loved how his story culminated. It was it s just so clever and i don t really want to go into it with them spoilers. But you also have a decent female character..
I mean a lot of i guess you wouldn t expect to see a lot of women in a medieval battle and the earliest what medieval battle based on western culture. But there is a very important fe mechanical finra who s the daughter of the field marshal on the side of the union and she has very important scenes and she has a very in depth character as well in the small bits that you see of her and and also on a very small character who s has perspective bits is a character called bec and you really really are at least. I did i really really empathize and felt for bec and how banks um storyline develops his his character arc is wonderful in this novel. So much so that at the sort of climax of his character are i was i was teary eyed.
I really really got involved and i don t think i per crombie s made me. Teary eyed before not many authors have to be honest. And and so that really that really struck me. And it s just wonderful that abercrombie is so powerful you can evoke such emotions.
Evoke such force. He puts so much imagination so much intelligence into his novels. It s like every single one is like some kind of didactic text. You you you really pick one up and okay.
He s sort of going against the norm. He s trying to well genre bend and stuff a gap. But abercrombies never in your face. He s never like oh yeah this you think this go girl.
They ve always actually gonna die. Kind of thing. It s not like that it s it s kind of like he does a different twist on his stories like food laws. A different kind of twist on epic fantasy.
And then a best of code is a different twist on revenge tragedy this is a bit they re very different twists on war drama. But you do have that drama part of it it s like every single bit of it you can understand why someone might love battle you also understand why someone would be paralyzed with fear. I mean you you it s a kind of thing. Where you you you d see possibly documentaries or films or something.
But you don t really kind of feel it you don t normally understand what the people on screen are actually thinking how they re actually existing in this just will pool of utter that s around them and but you get to see the thoughts of all the varying characters the the stronger. More military minded characters like crawl or the weak. Just not the lack of self confidence in characters like beck. It s just that it s so fully realized as as so many different layers.
So many differs so much depth in this novel. I mean. It s hard to to really just give it justice..
It is a fantastic piece of work and just even little bits like that the maps that appear every now and again where you see where the regiments are placed along the battlefield. I mean that just added a lot more even more to it from my perspective. Because i ve kind of get i ve got a little um. My i actually i m talking over.
But there s just so much to talk about with this novel. I don t mind and i ve got a. I i have a love for sort of like military history of seeing how a tactics have been deployed through a battlefield. Though i was in paris a few months ago and and seeing how the tactics that napoleon and wellington put into order in the battle of waterloo and seeing how the older regiments moved and came across each other was a very very interesting tip for me.
And it felt that way in this as well it felt like abercrombie had really studied military tactics. Quite well he had a the understanding of the geography of the land. He had a very good plan of how the geography should be sent out and it s just exciting stuff it feels like like all the attention to detail is there with the armor with the different parts of the armor different weaponry and stuff like that and the gory gruesome grittiness of war is just evident throughout its it s quite remarkable how strong and compelling. This story is it s absolutely brilliant.
I mean i guess people can enjoy it on its own. But i think it s really much better to be appreciated. If you ve read the full before so you had a fully understanding of this world and all the characters that inhabit it particularly a lot of the recurring. I have the returning ones like shivers ghost cold or that kind of thing and but it s a excellent addition to the first law series it continues a storyline.
Very well including the sort of ongoing struggle between buyers and issue history that that s very prevalent in this story and that last great to continue on as well continue with but just this story as it is as it stands an independent criticism of war of the horror of conflict between two sides. It s just breathtaking and i want to read it again for them yeah. That s my review of the heroes and very much looking forward to reading read country. But i think heroes is quite possible now my favorite abercrombie along with press.
We ve got because i loved better cold as well. But this is it it s a song absolutely amazing abercrombie is amazing and that s what i ll say about that um for anyone who s interested. I m gonna do a little bit of self promotion and so we have a hit me up on goodreads. Twitter links will be down below whatever.
